Fredrikstad Animation festival , October 2008: It’s been years since I visited this festival, even if it’s just an hours ride from Oslo by train. Legendary Disney-animator Andreas Deja, Amid Amidi and Gene Deitch were all good reasons to go this time. Deja did a wonderful talk on Disneys “Nine Old Men”, showing a lot of artwok I’ve never seen before (and I’ve seen most of what is commercially available from this era). He also did a talk on his own career, and was drawing Scar, Mickey and others live in the auditorium. See it for yourself in my gallery, it was great!
Gene Deitch was a director at UPA in the 50ies, and Amid Amini is best known for his blog “Cartoon Brew” and book “Cartoon Modern”. They did talks and presentations on the elegant 1950ies’ and 60is’ modern cartoons that revolutionized designs, technique and storytelling. Gene Deitch is also an occational blogger. Another cool thing is that they were screening the brand new Kurt-feature with Andreas Deja in the audience!
